Andrea’s Advice – The DOs and DON’Ts of College Life

By: Andrea

Hey guys and gals,

Have you recently applied to College or University? Since spring is quickly approaching, I figured I would compile a list of the DOs and DON'Ts of College life since many of you will be hearing back from the Universities you applied to in the fall. Here is a short list of things I learned to / not to do while working through your undergraduate degree.

...

1. DO NOT skip class- Okay, I have to get this one out of the way. This is not high school... Profs will not be chasing you down to attend class and hand in work. You don’t want to get to your fourth year and realize you don’t have the grades to get into grad school / pursue another degree / apply for the job you want. If you are paying for school, you REALLY should attend! Work hard, study, and hand things in on time.

2. DO start up study groups with your classmates! This can ultimately cut down on study time, make learning more fun, and give you an excuse to hang out with new people and make new friends!

3. DO NOT drink energy drinks before bed- I made this mistake in my first year! For some strange reason, I used to adore the taste of Diet Rockstar Energy Drink. I can’t believe I spent that year wondering why I had such bad insomnia!

4. DO become a tea-connoisseur! There are so many great caffeine-free teas on the market these days! I always find that drinking tea helps kick my brain into gear when it comes to writing term papers. Check out http://www.davidstea.com/ for some awesome tea selections (some of my all-time favorites: Pumpkin Chai, Chocolate Rocket, Checkmate and Bear Trap)

5. DO NOT be a hermit- I don’t recommend spending all of your time tucked away in your dorm room playing video games / hanging out alone with your boyfriend or girlfriend, etc. Even if you have a busy semester, don't forget about the outside world!

6. DO pull fun pranks on your floor mates- Above are some pictures of a dorm-room prank I pulled on the guy I liked while he went out of town for a few days… I guess it paid off, we are still dating :)

7. DO NOT gain a reputation for being the ‘obliterated’ one at all the parties- Everyone makes mistakes, but these days… EVERYTHING ends up on Facebook! Take my advice and 'check yourself before you wreck yourself.' You can still have fun without your head winding up in a trash can for the better part of the evening.

8. DO make an effort to plan and attend as many social events as possible- Throw parties, invite your floor mates over for coffee/tea, organize sport events, and plan group MOVIE and BOWLING dates! Also- Never pass up an opportunity to go to a dress up party!

9. DO NOT overspend- While most people want to start off on the right foot in college by decorating their dorm rooms, buying a new wardrobe, and updating their electronic devices, remember that college is expensive and that you should do your best to keep your spending to a minimum. Luckily, there are so many ways to be stylish and savvy at the same time.
Instead of buying brand new EVERYTHING, get creative with old furniture and clothing (there are so many awesome blogs on this), ask your parents if they are willing to donate any used kitchen appliances, and be sure to check out thrift stores for some great finds. If you don’t have a meal plan, you should also check out weekly grocery store ‘sale’ flyers when planning your meals, this can save you some big bucks! Remember, every penny counts!

10. DO start budgeting your expenses– Now that you are venturing into adulthood, you should have a working knowledge of your financial situation. At this point in your life, you should start building credit and you should switch to a student bank account to help save on monthly banking fees if you haven’t already. Allocate a specific amount of $ to things like: student debt, food, entertainment, tuition, housing etc. Need help creating a budget / financial plan? Visit Gail Vaz Oxlade’s website (From the shows Princess, and Till Debt Do Us Part) http://www.gailvazoxlade.com/

...Remember, college goes by FAST. Before you know it, you will get one of these.
Oh yeah, just don't forget to STUDY!

My Favorite Everyday Makeup PRODUCTS

By: Vanessa

"My LiPsTiCk BrInGs AlL tHe BoYs to The YaRd, Damn Right It's BetTer Than YouRs;)" haha

I’ve tried SOOO many makeup products...from doing my own and from acting on set and getting my makeup done by professional’s everyday. Here is a list of my faves, that compliment my skin, don’t make me to breakout and that I overall just love for my everyday makeup!

1. My %100 Pure Tinted Moisturizer- I am in love with this, it’s light gives a little coverage and gives you a brighter look! It’s organic, made from fruit pigments and does not clog my pores. It also has SPF 20.  I use the color “toffee” for my skin coloring.
Alternative: if being organic isn’t that important to you I also like Smashbox’s tinted moisturizer, I get color medium.

2. My %100 pure concealer- I use it for my under eyes or to cover a blemish.. really light, organic and made from fruit pigments.

     3. My Dr. Hauschka Duo Bronzer- I love this, organic, light compact powder made with essential oils that gives a golden Grecian bronzed glow!
I also like as an alternative, the body shops trio blush bronzer in "Warm Sunset"

  4. My 100% Pure Blush in Peppermint- Organic, light compact powder, smells like peppermint on your face..Hehe guys like it;) & chemical free!

     5. My MAC Studio Fix Powder- If you’re the type who likes more coverage than just a tinted moisturizer than I would recommend, MAC studio fix powder,  great for further coverage on top of concealor for blemishes…Or if your skin is feeling too shiny and you want a smoother looking palate.

6. My Honey Bee Gardens color “Valentine”- I’m really into PINKPINK lips…possibly thanks to Nicki Minaj lol..anyways I Always get compliments on my lipstick..it's organic. NO LEAD LADIES, It is from Honey Bee Gardens color “Valentine”. “My LiPgLoSs is PoPin!” ;)

     7. My Telescopic & Divaderm Fiberlash Mascara

Kiss Me Mascara / Tubing Lashes

By: Andrea

Hey guys! Since we've already devoted a lot of time to talking about lashes on our blog, I felt obliged to share with you one of my FAVORITE secret weapons that I was introduced to on set about four years ago!  This mascara is my ABSOLUTE go-to product for many actors and I'm going to tell you why!

In this photo I am wearing:
Kiss Me Mascara by Blinc

A film set is a strange and crazy place!  Sometimes you work around the clock, sometimes you have to ball your eyes out, and sometimes you end up working in not-so-friendly weather conditions.  You have to remember that no matter how you are doing or feeling, your face WILL be fully made up and ready to go throughout the entire day... This really teaches you to find products that work for you!

Mascara is one of the products I generally don't mess around with. I can't stand when my mascara flakes or rubs off under my eyes (giving you that ridiculous "racoon look").  Sometimes makeup artists swear by specific "waterproof" mascaras, but to be quite honest, MOST of the waterproofs that I have tried over the years have rubbed off and/or flaked just like regular mascaras (the difference being that you generally need makeup remover to take it off instead of soap and water).  Since my lashes are long, there is no stopping them from touching my skin. As a result, I am sceptical of MOST mascaras as I find they all tend to leave behind some kind of residue. This makes not only my life, but the life of my makeup artist miserable on set as we are constantly on "raccoon eye" duty!

My answer to this dilemma is BLINC'S KISS ME MASCARA!  This product does not merely paint your lashes... it TUBES them! The tubes DO NOT leave any residue behind and they stay intact throughout the entire day! Have you ever seen actors crying on screen and noticed that their mascara stays fully intact? They are probably using this brand! We also love that this mascara is NOT tested on animals.

What are tubes and how do they work (might you ask)? The mascara comes in a normal mascara bottle with a normal wand. You apply the mascara as you would any regular brand. The difference is seen after the mascara dries. No matter how much you cry, sweat, or touch your lashes, the tubes WILL NOT break, flake, or rub off!

When it comes time to take off your makeup for the day, you only need to use warm water and your fingers (it's easiest to do in the shower). After you lather warm water over your face, you gently rub your lashes with your thumbs and index fingers.  You will see that the tubes come off fully intact. Just make sure you clean up the tubes afterwards (they tend to get stuck in the sink if you leave them there to dry).
This is a picture of what the tubes look like after removing them using warm water.

One thing I will say about Kiss Me is that it doesn't give you the fullest lash look. The picture in the beginning of this post shows me wearing only Kiss Me (and while my lashes look long, they are not as full as they could otherwise be).  Generally I like to coat my top lashes with another brand (my favorite is Full Exposure Mascara by Smashbox) before I tube them. The photo below shows me after applying Smashbox followed by Blinc's Kiss Me.

Have any of you ever tried tubing your lashes??

*I once ordered a Blinc mascara and accidentally chose it in BLUE! At first I was disappointed at my oversight, but after trying it, I realized it actually looks pretty cool! I'll upload a photo soon :)

Andrea’s 10 Favorite Hair, Body and Skincare Products

By: Andrea

I wanted to share with you 10 products that I am currently obsessed with! This list is winter friendly. I have seen great results with these products (most of them are organic friendly, too)

1. CSI Amber Honey Exfoliating Scrub –I ordered this from Vitacost after reading all the rave reviews online. My skin is extremely dry and sensitive, therefore I am always skeptical when it comes to buying exfoliants as I find a lot of them tend to dry out my skin even more (causing my skin to to flake uncontrollably). I have been on the hunt for a perfect exfoliating scrub for a long time and I was particularly intrigued by this one after realizing it is made with honey (did any of you ever do honey face masks as a kid?). After looking up the scrub on the Cosmetic Database (ewg.org) and realizing it scored very well (Score: 1), I figured it was worth a shot. Boy was a pleased! This is by far the most nourishing scrub I have ever used on my face. It leaves your skin feeling polished and renewed (the same way you feel after getting a facial at a fancy spa). Oh, and this product smells fabulous… like a delicious dessert for the skin!

2. Neutrogena Rapid Clear Treatment Pads –Okay, so Vanessa got me totally hooked on these things this year! Whenever you feel a breakout brewing, these pads act like a SWAT team for your skin (they contain salicylic acid)! I try not to use this product every day because I don’t want my skin to become accustom to something that works so well in emergency situations. HIGHLY recommended if you are prone to the occasional breakout!

3. Burt’s Bees Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme –I first tried out this hand cream last summer when I was shopping for my boyfriend’s mom who was suffering from extremely dry hands at the time. The first thing I noticed was the lovely smell! It will definitely remind you of marzipan! Secondly, I noticed that the consistency of this product was thick without the stick (yay for rhymes)!  Burt’s Bees never fails to impresses me with the quality of their products. While this jar might be a little on the expensive side considering its size, it is well worth the investment if you experience dry or chapped hands! I also use this on my elbows and knees in the winter as it absorbs so well into dry and patchy skin!

4. 100% Pure Jojoba Oil –This is my lifeline! Especially in the winter when my skin tends to dry out, flake and break out! Jojoba oil is a fantastic liquid wax made from jojoba seeds, and can be used for many different things! I like to rub it over my face, neck and upper arms after I shower and before bed. I also rub it onto the ends of my hair to protect it from damage and splitting, pour it under the tap when I run baths, and use it as a base before putting on foundation. Unlike a lot of night creams, jojoba takes a long time to set, which keeps your skin moisturized for hours (great if you suffer from dry skin like me). Jojoba scores a 0 on ewg.org and should be a staple in everyone’s cupboard as far as I’m concerned. Also I figured I should mention that it’s pronounced ho-ho-bah… ;)

5. Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Oil – This is another fantastic oil to use on your skin! As you can probably tell by now, I have a thing for “almond.” Weleda’s skin care line ranges from body scrubs, to facial cleansers, to a line of safe creams for babies. Make sure you check out each scent before purchasing as some of them score much higher than others on ewg.org. Weleda’s Almond Facial Oil was recommended to me on set. It’s rated a 0 on the Cosmetic Database and it’s definitely winter friendly! You only need to use a few drops at a time to get the benefits of the product.

6. Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream – This is my go to cream! It’s light, soothing, and nourishing all at once. It’s very basic so it works well on acne-prone skin. It helps reduce mid-day flaking and it too is winter friendly!

7. Egyptian Magic – I’ve been reading about this mysterious all-purpose skincare product for ages! At first I was deterred by the price (they can cost as much as 50.00 for a standard sized bottle). It wasn’t until I found myself in the beauty section of an organic market during a “20% off storewide” event that I finally bit the bullet and purchased this “magic” bottle. Their website states that “Egyptian Magic is an all-natural skin cream made from six of nature's most powerful moisturizing and healing ingredients” (egyptianmagic.com). When you turn the bottle around you will notice that they use a variety of very basic and nourishing ingredients (Honey, Beeswax, Olive Oil, Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen and Bee Propolis). I personally adore the results I see from beeswax-based products and Egyptian Magic is no different. The product comes in solid form and melts into your skin as you rub it in (a lot like coconut oil). My mom has seen great results from rubbing it into her cracked heels, while I have noticed a huge improvement when it comes to those patchy winter spots that creep up during the dreary season. I have also noticed this product works wonders for eczema-prone skin. I LOVE my Egyptian magic!

8. Sa Avani Curative Skin Soothing Cream – Whenever my skin is feeling irritated, I reach for this product. It was initially recommended to me by a makeup artist on set in Vancouver so I immediately made an order through their website. The Sa Avani Skin Care line is manufactured in BC, Canada and is being raved about by actors and makeup artists alike. They pride themselves on selling products that are paraben, synthetic fragrance, sulfate, and alcohol FREE! The Curative Cream is great for people like me, who have dry but sensitive skin. Here is a link to their website should you be interested in checking out more of their products: saavani.ca

9. Moroccan Oil Treatment by MoroccanOil – My Aunt got me onto the MoroccanOil brand this Christmas! The actual oil is a godsend for anyone whose hair suffers from brittle ends that break and split easily. Since my hair is fine but curly, I only like to rub this product onto the tips of my hair after I shower to avoid looking too greasy. For people with thicker hair, you could easily rub this product all over to give your hair a lovely glow.

10. Curl Defining Cream by MoroccanOil – This is my new OBSESSION! This is by far the best curl defining product I have EVER tried (and I’ve tried LOTS). Since I’m not very patient when it comes to hair, I generally skip the blow-drying. This cream is great for the girl on the go. I literally step out of the shower, towel dry my hair, lather and scrunch my hair using this product… and I’m good to go! As my hair air-dries, it curls into nice, naturally defined locks. Check them out online: moroccanoil.com
